
Canon City, CO – The Royal Gorge Route Railroad’s last wine dinner of the year is Friday, September 16 at 6:30 p.m. It features a five-course menu expertly paired with some of Duckhorn Winery’s best bottles.
“Our annual wine train dinner is one of my favorite events — and it’s one of the most memorable of the year,” said Mark Greksa, co-owner of the Royal Gorge Route. “These are the evenings where we get to share some of our best bottles and new tastes made with excellent local ingredients.”
First Course: Duckhorn 2014 Sauvignon Blanc
Aromas of grapefruit, lemon curd and nectarine with rich notes of vanilla and homemade marshmallow. Flavors of cantaloupe, Asian pear and Fuji apple. The finish is persistent and refreshing with long mineral notes.
American Grana cheese and prosciutto wrapped honeydew with tear dropped peppers and a pineapple jalapeno chutney.
Second Course: Duckhorn 2012 Chardonnay
This is a lovely Chardonnay with warm, inviting aromas of Bosc pear, white peach, honeyed phyllo, marshmallow and cedar. On the palate, layers of Meyer lemon, honeydew and panna cotta are accentuated by a silky texture and rich oak, with bright acidity framing a long, luxurious finish.
Spinach and Rocky Ford cantaloupe salad with grilled sea to table Blue Marlin, fresh mint and a lemon dill aioli.
Third Course: Duckhorn 2012 Monitor Ledge Cabernet Sauvignon
Both elegant and appealing, this wine slowly reveals layered aromas of truffle, blackberry, dried fig and rose petals, as well as hints of sweet, warm oak. On the palate, flavors of pomegranate, red raspberry and rhubarb underscore the darker fruit elements, with hints of thyme and tamarind paste
Slow Roasted pepper crusted Elk Carpaccio with balsamic glaze with candied pecans and mango.
Fourth Course: Duckhorn 2012 Merlot
Sage and bay leaf, combined with layers of intense cranberry, Bing cherry, sassafras and cedar. With layers of red fruit, Mission figs and minerality, as well as hints of cedar, white pepper and pipe tobacco that linger of the finish
Colorado Buffalo Wellington over Quinoa and topped with a Marsala mushroom sauce and served with a Romanesco Cauliflower.
