The Royal Gorge Route Railroad is featured in 5280’s fall guide, “5 Colorado Train Rides Perfect for Leaf Peeping,” by Courtney Holden.

The article calls the route “a geologic and historical marvel.” The train travels out and back from Cañon City along the Arkansas River, with granite canyon walls rising more than 1,000 feet overhead. Along the way, the crew shares stories from the 1870s, when two rival railroads fought for the right to build through the gorge to reach Leadville’s silver mines.

5280 also highlights the dining on board. The scratch-made meals feature Colorado ingredients, including bread from a Denver bakery and chicken from an Englewood farm. This fall, select departures add Oktoberfest-inspired entrées and beers, and Saturday evenings in October bring a Halloween train with prizes for the best costumes.
