Our Story

Running the Royal Gorge Route

When we set out to resurrect the Royal Gorge Route Railroad line through Colorado’s grandest canyon, our vision was to offer far more than the traditional tourism experience. We knew we had a headstart with unmatched Colorado scenery and the most amazing section of railroad track in the country – so we set our sights on stunning railcar renovations, first-class food and exceptional service.

We’ve been industry leaders since we launched the train in 1999. Back then, no other Colorado train offered first-class dining and service. We’re more passionate than ever about amazing food, wine, local microbrews and top-notch cocktails, and we knew that our guests would appreciate a truly unique dining experience aboard the Royal Gorge Route.

From first-class trains to Murder Mystery events, we love sharing delicious dining experiences with our guests from around the world. As curious, frequent travelers ourselves, we’re always seeking out new ideas. Then, our incredible culinary team comes together to bring fresh tastes to life for our guests. Of course, exceptional service goes right along with it.

Because we’re an independent, family-owned, Colorado company we’re nimble in our offerings and the service we provide our guests. We can spend as much time as we feel necessary to train our staff about what a quality experience means from the guest’s point of view.

With more than 300 employees, the Royal Gorge Route is a complex operation. As a family-owned business, we are proud of our culture of service and caring, all while honoring our rich history and sharing it with every guest that rides.

Customer Satisfaction

It is challenging running a train with 17 cars, 6 classes of service, 4 full bars, and 5 on-board kitchens on a standard gauge locomotive. This is a moving city, complete with climate control, restrooms, gourmet kitchens, and a professional train crew. Occasionally we may miss the high mark we’ve set for ourselves, or perhaps an air-conditioner decides to take a break on a particularly hot day.

Thankfully, these obstacles are infrequent, but they are part of life when running a railroad of this magnitude. We are incredibly fortunate to be working with the most talented, hard-working and caring staff in Colorado. Should you encounter any issue during your travels on the Royal Gorge Route, let us know so we have the opportunity to improve our exceptional level of service for all guests.

We strive to be the best railroad in Colorado every day and we are grateful that our efforts have been noticed by Food Network, National Public Radio, USA Today, Travel Channel and others.

Our team has also earned a number of “best of” awards for our gourmet food, exceptional service, and breathtaking Colorado scenery (although, we can’t take credit for that!). But let’s face it, these awards are only as good as the day we received them. We set a higher standard for ourselves on every departure, ensuring we create an experience unlike any other, including top-rated dining, exceptional service, and stunning scenery — on every ride.
