In a September 2026 feature, Travel Dreams Magazine writer Tim Cotroneo shares an itinerary for a full Cañon City getaway: ride the Royal Gorge Route Railroad, stay at the Royal Gorge Mansion and dine at Antithesis.
Ride
The Royal Gorge Route Railroad runs along the floor of the Royal Gorge, which the article describes as “a completely different feel from the standard aspen-corridor ride.” The 24-mile round trip takes about two hours. Guests take in the canyon from glass-topped Vista Dome cars, pass the historic Hanging Bridge where the gorge narrows to just 30 feet, and keep an eye out for bighorn sheep, bald eagles and blue herons. The feature also mentions the October Twilight Train, with its laser-light show set to music.
Stay
The Royal Gorge Mansion is a restored 1884 estate and one of Colorado’s best-preserved examples of Second Empire architecture. It still has its mansard roof, original fireplaces and iron fence, and it sits on four tree-shaded acres along the Arkansas River.
Dine
Antithesis is the new fine-dining restaurant inside the mansion, led by Chef Johnny Church. The menu pairs global influences with Colorado-raised meats, seasonal produce and seafood from small independent suppliers. Opening dishes include pistachio and honey-crusted Colorado lamb, Korean fried chicken with kimchi, and steaks cooked in beef tallow.
Cañon City is about 45 minutes from Colorado Springs and two hours from Denver, which makes it an easy weekend escape.
